We all suffer from stress from time to time, but did you know that your diet might be having an effect on your high stress levels? What you eat can most definitely cause you to suffer more from anxiety and stress. If you’re not consuming a well balanced diet and are not getting the correct about of vitamins and minerals, then you’re more likely to suffer. Here’s a list of 7 anxiety and stress fighting foods. Implement some of these foods into your diet and see what happens!
Nuts make great snacks and with their salty, crunchy texture, they always cure my cravings.
Cashews are especially good for fighting stress! They have a high zinc content a 1-ounce serving has 11 percent of your RDA. Low levels of zinc have been linked to both anxiety and depression.
Our bodies have no way of storing zinc, so eating a handful or two of cashews a day may be beneficial for you. Putting cashews in your food is always a good way to switch it up whilst still getting your zinc intake.
2. Chamomile Tea
Chamomile tea has been used as a bedtime soother, but now there’s even more evidence of it’s soothing abilities.
A study from the University of Pennsylvania tested chamomile supplements on 57 participants with generalized anxiety disorder for 8 weeks, and found it led to a significant drop in anxiety symptoms. Further evidence from the University of Maryland Medical Center shows that chamomile tea promotes sleep too.
If you prefer you can still drink it in tea for instead of taking supplements, and you’ll still get the same effects.
3. Green Tea
Green tea has so many different benefits, but in this post we’re going to be talking about it’s stress reducing abilities.
Although green tea contains caffeine, green tea also has an amino acid called theanine. Theanine provides therapeutic benefits for those who suffer from anxiety and further studies will probably discover more on its benefits on acute stress.
Our bodies crave Vitamin C when we’re anxious or stressed to help repair and protect our cells. Blueberries are full of Vitamin C too!
Blueberries contain antioxidants and Vitamin C, which have been shown to provide anxiety relief.
Why not make a berry salad? That way you’re getting your blueberry intake, whilst also snacking on other deliciously healthy berries.
5. Black Beans
Black beans are rich in magnesium, which is a mineral that has a relaxing effect on the brain and body.
Magnesium is important in the function of the central nervous system. Studies have found a link between magnesium deficiency and stress, as well as anxiety and levels of the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol.
6. Pumpkin Seeds
Just like cashews, pumpkin seeds are loaded with zinc! As I mentioned earlier, zinc is an important mineral that helps ease anxiety and stress.
A study found that people who suffered from anxiety were diagnosed with a zinc deficiency. They were instructed to take zinc supplements for 8 weeks. The outcome was that they had significant reductions in their anxiety levels.
Try making some homemade soup and throwing pumpkin seeds in there. You can also add garlic, carrots, broccoli, turmeric, and other spices for further health benefits.
